Curse of Snishwimble

The Dummy

Drawing the characters for Curse of Snishwimble is one of my favorite ways to break loose creatively.

They’ve been drawn a lot. The first few dummies of this book were (in order) 3-D paper sculptures of crazed drawings leaping off the page, pop-up sculptures that were a lot like the 3-D sculptures - but that folded down to free space on my desk and finally, what you see here – drawings that are cut out so that I can layer them on top of each other with lettering and explosions and other drawings. (It makes making changes to my hand-lettering much easier as I toss aside one layer of many without disrupting the rest). I don’t fear editing. I just like to make sure that when the red marker of doom comes (which it always does (normally from me) that there’s as little blood shed as possible.)

Most of the drawings here are simple sketches of what the spread looks like in my head, but I think they give a pretty good idea of the direction.
